You Keep Saying Just

The name is painted on the gate at the end of the yard, and it has been repainted twice since her grandfather put it there with a brush and a steady hand.

It is her name. Same spelling, same everything. It is on her bank card and her driving license and the front of the wages envelopes she fills in on a Thursday.

A rep came in on the Tuesday before Easter with a folder under his arm and rain on his shoulders, looking round the little office with the calendar and the two chairs and the kettle on the filing cabinet, and he said, quite pleasantly, is one of the family about?

And she said, I'm just the office.

She said it easily. She has been saying it for eleven years. She said it while standing under a photograph of her grandfather in that same yard, holding the same brush he painted the gate with. The rep said no problem, he would call back Thursday, and he went out into the rain, and she put the kettle on and did not think about it again for four months.

What she does, since somebody should say it: the diary, the phone, the ordering, the wages, the two apprentices' hours, the customer who rings up in a state at ten to five on a Friday, the birthdays, the invoices, and the whole of what everyone in that yard calls knowing where things are. Her brother makes the stairs. She makes it possible for anybody to make anything at all.

And she says she is just the office.

Then it started coming up everywhere, the way a word does once you have heard yourself say it. At the school gate: I'm just his mum. At church, when the new curate asked: oh, I'm just a member, I don't do anything. At her aunt's birthday, to a woman she had never met, in a hall with the family name on half the cards on the table: I'm just the one who does the lifts.

You have said it so often it comes out ahead of your name. You have never once heard it as a strange thing to say about yourself, because it does not feel like a claim. It feels like modesty, and modesty is a virtue, so the word has had a free pass for eleven years.

But sit still for a second and look at what it actually announces. Not I do a small job here. Something else, underneath, that you have never said out loud and have believed for a long time: that you are here on the strength of being useful, and that the name on the gate is not really, in the way that counts, yours.

The word that goes in front of your name

Modesty is a real virtue and this is not it.

Real modesty is not thinking about yourself much either way. What that word does is a different operation entirely: it gets in first. Say just before anybody else has to work out where to put you, and nobody ever has to, and there is no risk at all of being caught claiming more than was given. It is a small, exhausting piece of defensive work, performed dozens of times a year, and it has been so successful that the whole family now describes you the way you taught them to.

And here is the part that costs you. What you say about your standing is what you then act on. A person who is the office asks permission. A person who is the office does not open the post that looks important, does not say what she thinks in the meeting about the yard, waits to be told, and thanks people for things that were never favors.

You are not staff in your own Father's house. Scripture puts it in a sentence a father says to a son who had spent years describing himself as a laborer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about a woman in a small office rather than a nice story about somebody else's family.

Hear the sentence itself.

And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.Luke 15:31

That is the elder brother. Not the one who ran off. The one who stayed, who worked, who never disobeyed a single order and said so, and who stood in the yard on the night of the party doing his sums out loud: these many years do I serve thee.

Serve. His own father's estate, his own inheritance, his own house, and the word he reached for was the word for staff.

And look at what the father does not do. He does not argue with the boy's arithmetic and he does not promise him something later. He tells him what is already true, in the present tense, and it had been true the entire time the boy was outside in the dark totting up his years: thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.

You have not been on a trial period, and there is no assessment coming. The written word says we have obtained an inheritance in Him, and obtained is finished business, and the Holy Spirit is the one who seals that rather than a family deciding you have earned your place at last.

An heir is not a very trusted stranger

Two people can stand in the same yard and do the same work and be in two completely different worlds.

A stranger who is trusted does everything correctly, is thanked, and is careful. Every good year is evidence that the arrangement is working. Every mistake is a threat to it. He never quite relaxes, because his standing is a running total and the total can go down.

An heir does the same work with the same care, and cannot lose the surname by dropping a tin of screws.

That is the difference, and it is not a feeling. It is a legal fact about where you stand, and you can be an heir and feel like staff for eleven years, which is precisely what has been happening.

The word *just* has no right to stay in front of your name. Scripture says of His people that they are heirs, and joint heirs with Christ, and that the Spirit Himself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God, so the testimony about your standing is being given by the Holy Spirit and not by a rep with a folder or by your own mouth on a wet Tuesday.

And notice the direction of the whole thing, because this is where inheritance gets quietly turned into wages by people who mean well.

You were made an heir on a day that had nothing at all to do with your usefulness. Scripture says He predestinated us unto the adoption of children according to the good pleasure of His will, and the good pleasure was His, not your eleven years of Thursdays, and it is His Spirit who cries Father in you as evidence that the adoption already went through.

Nobody adopts a child in return for services rendered. Nobody promotes a daughter to daughter.

And you are receiving today rather than applying today. The inheritance is described in Scripture as already given, kept, reserved, ours in Christ now, and the Holy Spirit is called the earnest of it, which is the word for the first part handed over in advance, a thing already in your hands rather than a promise for later.
