The app on his phone had a number in it and the number was three hundred and thirty four.
He never looked at it in the morning. He looked at it around half past nine at night, the way another man checks a lock before bed. It had been 1 once, and 1 had been the hardest number in the world to look at. Then it had been 40. Then it had been 200, and somewhere around 250 he had stopped feeling like a man holding his breath and started feeling like a man who was simply living.
His sister put a card on the fridge at 300. Nobody made a fuss about it. That was the arrangement and he liked the arrangement.
Then there was a Thursday.
It is not a dramatic story, and the undramatic ones are the ones that catch people. Nothing collapsed. Nobody shouted. He was tired in a way he had not been tired in months, and there was a gap in the evening, and the gap did what gaps do.
By eleven o'clock it was over, and he was sitting on the edge of the bath with the light off.
What he did next is the part worth watching, because it is the part almost everybody does. He opened the app and reset the counter. The screen said 0. He looked at that 0 for a long time, and in the space of about four seconds he made a decision that had nothing whatsoever to do with the app.
He decided that the 0 was the truth about everything.
Not just the days. The whole thing. The praying. The Thursday nights in the room with the bad chairs and the good people. The promise he made in his mother's front room with his hand flat on her Bible. The thing God said to him in a car park in the second week, when he could not stop shaking and did not know why he was crying. All of it, reset. Back to nothing. Zero on the counter, zero on the covenant, and start again from the bottom of the hill carrying a heavier bag than last time.
He was still sitting there at one in the morning. The tile was cold through his socks.
And now it is you on the edge of the bath, so stay with me, because in everything he decided in those four seconds there was exactly one lie, and it was not the one about the days.
The days did go back to one. That is what a counter measures, and a counter is honest, and there is no shame in an honest instrument doing its job.
The covenant did not move. It could not. It was never yours to reset.

Which party is keeping this
Every agreement has a load-bearing side, and the only question on that bathroom floor is which side this one hangs from.
So ask it plainly. Did God's commitment to you in month two rest on your having got through month one? If it did, then what you had was never a covenant. It was a rolling contract with a performance clause, renewed nightly by a man checking a number at half past nine, and something like that was always going to end on a Thursday, because anything suspended from a person's consistency eventually meets the evening that person is too tired to hold it up.
You are held inside a promise you did not sign. Scripture says of Christ that He is the surety of a better testament, Hebrews 7:22, and a surety is the one who answers for the debt when the other party cannot, which is the exact position of a man on the edge of a bath at one in the morning, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who turns that from a fact into a relief.
Paul says the same thing in a way that is almost startling, because he builds a chain of conditions and then breaks his own chain.
It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: if we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.2 Timothy 2:11-13
Read that last clause slowly, because Paul does something there that ought to be impossible. He has just built a chain of conditions, and then he breaks his own chain. If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful. And he does not leave it as sentiment. He gives the reason, and the reason is not about us at all: he cannot deny himself.
God's faithfulness is not a response to your performance. It is a property of His nature. He is faithful the way fire is hot.
You were not dropped a tier on Thursday. Scripture says nothing in all creation can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord, Romans 8:39, and Paul wrote that list without leaving a gap where the worst evening of your year could fit, and His Spirit is the one who presses that into a man who has spent the night arguing the opposite.
A counter measures days, not standing
Here is the confusion, and it is an honest one, because the two things sat next to each other for eleven months and started to look like one thing.
The counter measures days. It is a useful instrument and it deserves respect. Days matter, the count matters, and going back to it tomorrow morning is a good and sane thing to do. It measures exactly what it says it measures.
Your standing with God is not on that screen. It never was. It was settled at a cross before that phone was manufactured, and it does not have a running total, because a running total would mean it depended on the run.
You have not been placed on probation with God. His word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and it says now, which is the tense that includes tonight, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that sentence land somewhere below the ribs rather than staying a doctrine you agree with and cannot feel.
This next part matters more than any of it. Whatever help is currently around you, keep it. The Thursday room. The person you ring. The people who have walked this with you and know what your voice sounds like when it is going wrong. None of that is a sign of weak faith and none of it is in competition with God, who has a long history of doing His work through ordinary people in rooms with bad chairs. Go back to them. Tell them what happened. Let them be what they are for.
You are still exactly who God said you were in that car park. Scripture says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, meaning He does not change His mind about a person, and it is His Spirit who told you the truth about yourself in the second week and who has not withdrawn one syllable of it since.
The breakthrough here is a separation, and it is the whole thing.
The count goes back to one. Let it. Open the app in the morning and put a 1 in it without ceremony and without a speech, because that number is honest and honest numbers are friends.
The covenant does not go back to anything, because it was never at a place you could return it to. God walked both sides of it. Christ stands as its surety. Its clauses do not read if he manages eleven months, and they never did, not on day 40 and not on day 334 and not last Thursday.
So the shame that told you to start again from the bottom of the hill with a heavier bag was doing arithmetic on the wrong ledger.
You have not lost eleven months of anything that mattered. His word says the path of the just is as the shining light that shineth more and more unto the perfect day, and a light that shines more and more is not a light that starts over, and the Spirit of God has kept every hour of what He was building in you.
Tomorrow the number says 1. That is not a demotion. It is a Tuesday, and Tuesdays are how everything gets built.
Declare this over yourself
In Christ you have been given a standing that does not fluctuate with a count, and Scripture says that standing rests on His faithfulness rather than on yours, which is why His Spirit can put these words in the mouth of a man who feels least entitled to say them tonight. The authority is His, exercised over shame and over a lie about your position, never over another person and never over the timing. How God rebuilds the days is His to decide, in His own way.
- Counter on my phone, you went back to one and the covenant did not move. In the name of Jesus you are a count of days and not a verdict on me, and the God who cannot deny Himself is still keeping every word He signed.
- Verdict I passed on myself in the dark, get off me. Scripture says He abideth faithful even when we believe not, so the ledger I have been keeping on myself is overruled by the One who keeps me.
- Father, You kept every line of this covenant through eleven months and through one evening, and You did not flinch at either. My hand is flat on Your word, and I am going back to the people who sit with me on Thursdays.
