It rains hard at ten to three, so by home time the whole gate is hoods.
Same coat, every child, navy, school issue. Same hood pulled forward against the wet so the faces are gone, only chins and the shine of the tarmac and thirty small shapes coming out in a stream with their bags held over their heads.
She has come straight from work and she is standing where she always stands, by the second post, because that is where she said she would be from the first week of reception and she has never once moved.
Her daughter comes out ninth or tenth, hood up, head down, walking the way she walks. And she goes the wrong way.
Not far. The rain is loud and she is half blind under that hood and there is a woman in a dark coat standing where the mothers stand, and the child takes three steps toward her and puts a hand out for a sleeve that is not her mother's.
Here is the part that matters, and it takes two seconds.
The woman in the dark coat is kind about it. The mother is already moving. She does not shout, she does not panic, she does not stand there judging the state of the light, and she certainly does not blame a seven year old for hoods and rain. She crosses the tarmac and says her daughter's name.
That is all. One word, in the voice that has said it every day since the child could hear anything at all. Said at ordinary volume, in the rain, from behind.
And the hood comes up and turns, and the whole thing is over, and thirty seconds later they are walking home talking about somebody's birthday party at the weekend, and nobody in that playground will remember it happened.
The child was wrong. Genuinely wrong, and for a moment properly heading the wrong way.
And she was never once lost, because being lost depends on nobody knowing where you are, and there was a woman at the second post who had never taken her eyes off her.
Now here is why any of this matters to you.
You have been lying awake with a version of that playground in your head, and the fear is not that God cannot speak. You have never doubted that. The fear is that there are more voices in the world than there used to be, and some of them are convincing, and you have started to wonder whether you would honestly be able to tell the difference. Not in theory. At three in the morning, tired, wanting an answer badly.
And you have not said it out loud to anybody, because said out loud it sounds either paranoid or faithless, and it is neither. It is a hood in the rain and a stream of coats that all look the same.

The sheep in that chapter are not the experts
Turn to the tenth of John, and read it looking for the training program.
It is not there. That is the first thing to notice and it is the thing nobody notices, because we arrive at that chapter with a question about detection and the chapter refuses the question entirely.
And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.John 10:4-5
Nobody teaches the sheep anything. There is no test, no checklist, no method for telling a shepherd from a stranger, and no sheep anywhere in that passage is ever asked to become good at this. They know the voice because they have lived within earshot of it, and the knowing is a by-product of belonging, not a skill anybody drilled into them.
You are not the last line of defense in your own life. Scripture says the Lord knoweth them that are his, and that sentence puts the knowing on His side of the relationship first, where the weight can actually be carried, and it is the Holy Spirit and not your alertness who keeps a person inside the sound of that voice.
Read the chapter again and count who does the work. He goes before them. He calls them by name. He leads them out. He gives His life for them. The sheep, in the whole passage, do exactly two things: they hear, and they follow. That is the entire job description, and one of the two is not even an action.
The fear that you would be the one taken in has no right to stay in the room with a verse like that. John 10:29 says no man is able to pluck them out of His Father's hand, which is a statement about the strength of the hand rather than the cleverness of the sheep, and the Spirit He gave is called the Spirit of truth, a description of what He does rather than a burden laid on you.
Nobody in that story is asked to identify the wolf
This is the part that will let you sleep, so take it slowly.
There is a wolf in John 10. There is also a hireling, and a thief who comes to steal and kill and destroy, so nobody can say Jesus was naive about how many voices there are or what some of them want. The danger is named plainly.
And still, not once, in any line of it, is a sheep asked to identify anything.
The hireling flees when he sees the wolf coming. That is the whole indictment of him: he leaves, because the sheep are not his. And the good shepherd is defined against him by one thing, which is that He does not leave. He stays where the danger is. He puts Himself between.
So the question you have been asking at three in the morning is a real question, and it is aimed at the wrong person. You have been asking whether your discernment is strong enough to survive the next few years. The chapter answers a different question, the one underneath it: who is standing between you and the wolf, and does He run.
You were bought, named and counted before you ever learned to be careful. His word says he calleth his own sheep by name, and a name is not a password you might forget under pressure, it is a thing the other person holds and keeps saying, and the Spirit of God bears witness with your spirit that you belong to Him, which is a witness given to you and not a verdict you have to reach.
I am not going to hand you a technique here. Not one. There is a whole industry of people who will teach you to check things, and some of it is even useful, and none of it is the ground you are standing on, and if I gave you a method tonight you would only lie awake wondering whether you had run it properly.
What you have is not a method, it is a Person, and He knows which one is His. Scripture says my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me, and notice the order in that sentence, because His knowing sits in the middle holding the two halves together, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a familiar voice sound familiar rather than merely correct.
Put the weight down. It was never yours to carry, and it is too heavy for anybody's shoulders.
You have been trying to guarantee, alone, at three in the morning, that nothing false ever reaches you. That is not vigilance, it is a load nobody in Scripture was ever handed, and the reason it never lifts is that it has no floor. There is no amount of being right that will ever feel like enough.
Tonight you are inside a keeping that started before you noticed anything was changing. Scripture says he that keepeth thee will not slumber, which was written about a God who does not need the night watch you have been standing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who guides into all truth, so the leading is His office and not a test you are sitting.
He may well settle the question you are carrying, and He may leave it standing for a while and settle you instead, and that is His to decide. What is not in question is whose you are, and He has never once mistaken you for somebody else's.
So you can be wrong sometimes. You can be tired, and take three steps toward the wrong coat in the rain, and it will not be the end of you, because the whole of your safety was always in the fact that He knows which one is His and He is already crossing the tarmac.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with the paper still in front of you. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and every word of standing here is His and has been given to you, which is why these lines hold at an hour when your own certainty does not, and it is His Spirit rather than your volume that carries them. Whether He settles the question tonight or keeps you steady while it stands is His to decide, and however He answers, the keeping does not change hands.
- Question I have not said out loud to one living person, you are being said out loud tonight and you are not bigger than the One I am handing you to. Scripture says the Lord knoweth them that are his, so the knowing in this house has never rested on how alert I am at three in the morning. In the name of Jesus, you go on the paper and you stay with Him.
- Fear that tells me I would be the one taken in, you are not a prophecy and you have no right to stay. God calls His own sheep by name and no one is able to pluck them out of the Father's hand, and His Spirit bears witness with my spirit that I am His. I am known, and I am not the last line of defense in my own life.
- Lord Jesus, You are the Shepherd who goes before and does not run when the danger shows up, and Scripture says no one is able to pluck Yours out of the Father's hand. I thank You that You know which one is Yours, that You have never once mistaken me for somebody else's, and that I do not have to be clever to be kept. The paper is in Your hands now, and I am going to sleep.
