There are forty plots behind the leisure center and a tap at each end, and on a Saturday in August the whole place smells of tomato leaves and somebody's bonfire.
Plot 22 has a green shed with a door that has to be lifted to shut.
She took it on in a good spring, the way everybody does. Dug it over in a weekend. Beans in, two rows of onions, a strawberry bed she was quietly proud of. For nine weeks she was the kind of person who has an allotment.
Then a bad autumn. Then a worse winter. Then a long stretch of months where the plot stopped being a pleasure and became one more thing waiting to be a failure.
She meant to go. She meant it the way people mean a thing at eleven at night, which is genuinely, every single week.
By the following June she had stopped driving down that road altogether. Not as a decision. The route simply changed. Passing the gate cost something, and there were other ways round to the shops.
Two years. That is the length of the gap.
She went back in September because a cousin asked her outright and she could not find a way to say no. She had the whole speech ready in the car on the way over. Weeds to the waist. Shed gone. Somebody else's plot by now, and fair enough.
The gate stuck the way it had always stuck. The path was the same path, the same broken slabs, the same water butt on the corner with the lid that never sat right.
And plot 22 was dug over.
Beans staked. Nine canes, tied at the top in a bunch the way her grandfather used to tie them. Onions lifted and drying on a rack made out of an old pallet. The shed door hanging straight, because somebody had taken a plane to the bottom of it.
Des on plot 19 straightened up with a fistful of bindweed and said good morning exactly as if she had been down there on Tuesday.
She got out one word, which was why.
And he said it without making anything of it at all.
"It's your plot. I water what's yours. Never seemed to me to depend on you turning up."
Now stand where she is standing, on that path, in the middle of that sentence.
Because what she felt first was not relief. It was the specific discomfort of having been kept while you were absent, which is a much harder thing to receive than a telling off. A telling off would have settled the account. This settles nothing. It just stands there, staked and watered and straight, with your name on it.
Three altar calls. Three cards filled in at the front of three different rooms, and every one of them meant at the time.
And underneath all of it, quiet and constant and entirely certain: God must be so tired of you by now.

Which party is actually keeping this
Let me ask you the question that changes the room, and then let me put the verse under it.
Whose promise is it?
Not whose benefit. Whose promise. When you walked to the front of that room the first time, and the second, and the third, what exactly was being established? Were you signing terms, or were you saying yes to terms that had already been drawn up and paid for by Somebody else entirely?
Because here is the sentence Paul wrote to a young man who was watching people fall away all around him.
If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.2 Timothy 2:13
Read the reason it gives. Not "he is very patient". Not "he makes allowances". He cannot deny himself. His faithfulness is not a mood He is in about you. It is a fact about His nature, and He would have to stop being God before it changed.
You are held inside a covenant that has never once been renegotiated at your end. Scripture puts the reason in His own character rather than in your record, and that is the whole architecture of it: the standing or falling of this was never placed on the shoulders of the party who could not carry it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who presses that into a person who has been quietly counting their own cards.
Think about what Des actually said on that path. Not "you have let this go". Not "you should have come". He said, I water what is yours, and then he said the thing underneath it, which is that the watering never depended on her turning up.
That is not a soft sentiment. It is a statement about who was responsible for the plot.
You have been kept while you were away, and kept is the precise word for it. Psalm 121 says that He who keeps you does not slumber, and the verse spends its whole length on what the Keeper is doing and not one syllable on what the kept person is managing, and the Spirit is the one who makes that land on somebody who has been away two years.
Three is not a tally
Now let me hold the three altar calls carefully, because I am not going to make them small.
Those were real. The walk to the front was real, and it cost something both times you did it in a room where people knew you. The card in your hand was not a performance. Something in you was genuinely reaching, three separate times, for a God you genuinely wanted.
What those moments were never designed to be is the load-bearing wall.
And I think you know the exact moment the arithmetic turned, because it is the same for everybody. It stopped being about God and started being about the count. Three began to look like evidence. Not evidence of hunger, which is what it actually is, but evidence of instability, and from there it is a very short walk to the certainty that He is tired.
You were prayed for before you failed, and the order of those two things is not an accident. In Luke 22:32 Jesus tells Peter plainly, before a single denial, that He has prayed for him that his faith fail not, and the praying comes first, ahead of the failing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an old sentence like that and makes it present tense in a kitchen.
Peter denied Him three times. Three. By a fire, in a courtyard, with a servant girl asking questions, and the third one with cursing in it.
And when they met again it was at another fire, on a beach, with breakfast already cooking, and Jesus asked him three times whether he loved Him. Not to rub his face in it. To give him a yes for every no, out loud, in front of the others, so that nothing was left hanging.
That is what God does with a three. He does not file it. He fills it.
That certainty that He must be tired of you has no right to stay in your mouth. It is written that His compassions fail not, that they are new every morning, and that His faithfulness is great, and the word chosen there is new, which means this morning's supply was not drawn down by anything you did with last year's, and the Spirit is the one who makes a person believe a sentence like that about themselves.
You are not on probation between one card and the next. Scripture says He ever lives to make intercession for those who come to God by Him, and ever is the load-bearing word: not in seasons, not in your good fortnights, but continuously, including the two years the road was avoided, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been carrying that unbroken work while it went completely unnoticed.
So here is what today is actually asking of you, and it is not a fourth card.
It is not a better run at it. It is not a promise to be more consistent, offered up in advance as a kind of security, which is what the last three were quietly becoming by the end.
You have a plot that is dug over and staked and watered, and every bit of that work was done while you were not there. Scripture says that He who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ, and the performing is put in His hands from start to finish, and it is the Holy Spirit at work in you who is the deposit and the guarantee of it.
You are not walking back in to renegotiate. There is nothing to renegotiate. You are walking back in to receive what has been maintained in your absence by a God who cannot deny Himself and was never once tired.
Put the counting down. It was never a measurement of His patience. It was only ever a measurement of your hunger, and hunger is not a fault to apologize for. It is the most hopeful thing about you.
Declare this over yourself
Speak this out loud with your hand where you put it. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is spoken from inside the covenant rather than from the doorway of it, and it is written that He is the surety of a better testament, which means the guarantee was never yours to provide. The Holy Spirit is the one who seals this and makes it more than words in a kitchen. Speak it, then leave the outcome to Him.
- Three cards in a drawer, you are not a tally and you are not the terms of anything. Scripture says He abides faithful because He cannot deny Himself, so in the name of Jesus I take you off the table where the evidence goes and I put you where the hunger goes.
- Certainty that God is worn out with me, get off this table. You were never a revelation and you were never true: the Holy Spirit is the one who tells me whose I am, and His compassions are new this morning and were never drawn down by anything I did with last year's.
- Lord, You kept what was mine while I was not there, and I am laying my hand on it today and taking it back up. Scripture says You ever live to make intercession, so the keeping of this was always Yours, and I am done offering You my consistency as security in the name of Jesus. I come back as one who is kept, not as one on probation.
