It is nine words. He counted them once, which tells you something all by itself.
He says them last thing, in the dark, after the light is off and before he turns over. Same nine words, same order, roughly the same tone of voice, the way a man says a phone number he has known since childhood. He has been saying them for nine years. He has done the arithmetic on that too, at about three in the morning once, and stopped when the number got past three thousand.
They are good words. That is the thing to hold on to here. There is no cynicism in them and no laziness. They are the honest words of a man who cares enormously about being right with God, and they are aimed at one specific thing he did, one specific week, a long time ago now.
He confessed it properly the first time. He wept. He told somebody. He put right what could be put right, and some of it could not be, and he has carried that part with a kind of quiet dignity that the people around him have never known about.
And then he said the nine words again the next night.
Not because anything new happened. Because the last thing before sleep is when the mind goes quiet enough for the thing to come back up, and when it comes up he does the only move he knows, which is to ask again. Nine years of that. He has said those words in hotel rooms and in the spare bed at his sister's and once, silently, on a night flight.
Here is what has never occurred to him, and it is the whole reason this exists.
He is not praying too much. Nobody in heaven is irritated with him. There is no sin in the repeating and there is nothing wrong with the man.
He is simply queueing at a window that closed nine years ago, and nobody has ever told him he can go and sit down.
Now the dark is yours, and the nine words are yours, and you know them well enough to say them while thinking about something else entirely.
You have never once believed God was cruel. That is not the shape of it. You believe He forgave you, in the way a person believes a thing they were taught, and every night at about eleven you go back and check, because the checking has become how you stay all right.
There is a chair in this house with your name on it. You have been standing at the desk in the hall for nine years asking if you may come in.

Heirs receive. Strangers petition.
There is a difference between the way a guest and the way a son move around a house, and it is not about how welcome either of them is.
A guest asks. A guest asks whether it is all right to make a cup of tea, and asks again next visit, because a guest's access is renewed each time by permission. A son opens the cupboard. Nothing about the son is more loved than the guest in that moment. The difference is legal, not emotional: one of them lives there.
The New Testament will not stop hammering that this is what happened to you.
And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.Hebrews 10:17-18
Read the second sentence, because it does the work. Where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. Not a smaller offering. Not an annual one. No more offering, because the offering was made once and accepted, and there is nothing left in the ledger for a second one to pay off.
You are an heir in that house, and heirs do not queue at their own door. Hebrews 10:18 says where there is remission there is no more offering for sin, and no more is a completed arrangement rather than a generous mood, and it is the Holy Spirit who moves that sentence out of your theology and into the last five minutes of your night.
Notice that the verse before it puts the remembering on God. Their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. That is not divine amnesia and it is not a claim that a holy God has forgotten something. It is covenant language. It means He does not bring it up. It has no standing in the relationship, it is not on the table when He looks at you, and it never comes into the room when you do.
You have been forgiven in a tense nobody told you about. Scripture says in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, and Paul writes have, present and possessed, not may one day obtain, and His Spirit is the one who makes a possessed thing feel possessed.
Nine years of a good man at the wrong window
Here is what happened, and it is worth saying gently, because the man in the dark has done nothing wrong.
The first confession was right and true and Scripture asks for it. Confession is real, and telling God the truth about yourself is one of the healthiest things a person ever does.
What happened afterwards is not a fault. It is a groove. The mind is very good at grooves, and a thing that hurt badly enough leaves one, and every night the mind runs down that groove and arrives at the same place, and every night a decent man does the decent thing and asks again. That is not disobedience. It is not weak faith. It is a man being careful with something that mattered to him.
But careful has been costing you the inheritance.
You were adopted, and adoption does not come with a probation period. Scripture says ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father, Romans 8:15, and a man does not petition for entry to a house where he calls the owner Father, and it is the Spirit Himself who prompts that word in your mouth.
There is something else worth naming. Part of what returns at eleven o'clock is not conviction at all. Conviction is specific, it comes with a way forward, and it lifts when you take it. What returns at eleven is the other thing, the vague heavy accusation that never names a next step because it does not want one. Scripture calls the source of that the accuser of the brethren, and accusation has one tell: it always leaves you knowing you are guilty and never knowing what to do.
You are not on trial tonight and there is no case open. His word says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and now is the word that covers eleven o'clock tonight, and the Holy Spirit is the one who bears witness with your spirit that you belong to God.
The breakthrough is not that you must stop saying the nine words. Nobody is taking anything off you and there is no new rule here.
The breakthrough is that the thing being asked for every night has been in your hand the entire time, and once a man sees that, the asking usually changes shape by itself.
Talk to God about it as much as you like. He is not tired of you and He has never once sighed. But talk to Him about it the way an heir talks and not the way a stranger at a window talks: not please would You, but thank You that You already did. The first is a petition into an unknown. The second is a receipt being read out loud.
You have nothing outstanding on this, and nothing has been deferred to later. Scripture says as far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us, and hath removed is finished work in the past tense, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a finished thing into a dark bedroom at eleven o'clock.
So tonight, when the groove opens and the mind starts down it, do the new thing. Open your hands instead of clenching them, and say thank you.
It will feel strange, the way the key felt strange in the door. Nothing dramatic happens when you walk in. That is precisely the proof.
Declare this over yourself
In Christ you have been given the standing of a son and not a visitor, and Scripture says that standing was settled by one offering and never renewed nightly, which is why His Spirit can put these words in the mouth of a man who has spent nine years at the wrong window. The authority here is His, exercised over accusation and over a groove, never over another person, and how God unwinds nine years of habit is His to decide, in His timing.
- Nine words I have said three thousand times, you are a prayer and not a debt still owing. In the name of Jesus, God says He remembers this no more, and there is nothing left on this account for me to reopen tonight.
- Feeling that I live here on sufferance, get off me. Scripture says that where remission is there is no more offering for sin, and I am an heir with a key in my hand, not a stranger on a step in the rain.
- Father, You closed this with Your own Son and You have never once reopened it. My hands are open, and I am receiving what You gave me instead of asking for it again.
