The Heat at the Till

She had done the sum twice before she got to the till, once in the aisle with the tins and once by the freezers, and she was carrying the running total in her head the way you carry a full cup up a staircase.

She is good at this. Genuinely, unusually good. She knows what everything costs without looking. She knows which shelf the cheaper one is on, which is never the middle one. She can make four meals out of what most people would call the ingredients for one, and her son goes to school in a shirt ironed so well that no one has ever once looked at him twice.

The total came up higher than the number she was carrying. Not by much. Not by a catastrophe. By the sort of gap that happens when something has gone up and nobody sent a letter about it.

So she said, sorry, could you take the washing powder off.

And that was all. Six words in a plain voice. The girl on the till said no problem at all and did it in about four seconds, and behind her a man shifted his basket from one hand to the other, which is a thing men do in queues for no reason whatsoever.

But by then her face had gone hot from the jaw up, and her ears were burning, and she was saying something unnecessary about having plenty at home, and she heard herself say it, and that made it worse.

She carried the bags to the car and put the washing powder back on the shelf on the way out because leaving it at the till felt like leaving evidence.

In the car she did not cry. She sat for a minute with her hands on the wheel and thought, with complete clarity, everyone in that queue knows exactly what I am.

And this is the part I want to slow down, because you have never said it out loud to another human being.

You do not believe that you are short of money. You believe that being short of money is a report about you. That it says something about how you have handled things, and how far you have got by your age, and what sort of person you turned out to be, and that a screen at a checkout published it in front of five strangers on a Thursday afternoon.

You are the most careful person you know with what you have got, and you feel like a fraud in a queue.

An amount is a fact, not a report

Let me be very plain about what happened in that shop, because plainness is what this needs.

A number was higher than another number. That is the whole event. It is arithmetic, and arithmetic is morally silent: it has never once had an opinion about anybody.

Everything else in that scene, the heat in your face, the unnecessary sentence about having plenty at home, the washing powder put back on the shelf by your own hand so as not to leave evidence, was a story laid over the top of the arithmetic. It is a good story, well told, with a strong cast. It is not true.

You were not being assessed at that till. Scripture is blunt that the Lord looketh not on the outward appearance but on the heart, and a trolley is about as outward as an appearance gets, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about a Thursday afternoon rather than a nice sentiment about somebody in the Old Testament.

Now hear a man who lived in both directions and would not be embarrassed by either.

I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.Philippians 4:12

Look at how he says it. He is writing this to a whole church, in a letter he knew would be read out loud, and he names being abased and being hungry as flatly as he names being full. No apology. No explanation of how he came to be in that position. No suggestion anywhere that the empty stretches were a mark against him or the full ones a mark for him.

And notice the verb he chooses: I am instructed. It is the word for being taught a thing, the way an apprentice is taught. He does not say he achieved contentment or that he earned his way out of need. He says he was shown how to stand in both, which makes it something given to him rather than a grade awarded to him.

You have been carrying an accusation that Scripture never wrote down. There is nothing in the written word that makes an amount a verdict on a person's standing with God: the widow at Zarephath was down to a handful of meal and God called her the one who would feed His prophet, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who takes that off a woman sitting in a car park with her hands on the wheel.

This works in both directions, and it matters that we say so. Being short is not a disgrace. It is also not a holiness. A tight month does not make anybody more spiritual, and a comfortable one does not make anybody less, and any teaching that runs it either way has quietly made money into a measuring stick for something it cannot measure.

The heat is shame, and shame is about being seen

Here is why the checkout is the worst part, and not the kitchen table where the real sums happen.

The kitchen table is arithmetic in private, and it gets done excellently there. The till is arithmetic in public. What burned was not the money. It was the being seen, and shame is the specific feeling that being seen would be the end of you.

That is worth naming carefully. Guilt says I did something wrong and can be answered. Shame says I am something wrong, and it cannot be answered by arithmetic, which is why doing the sums better has never once cooled your face.

The heat that says you are something wrong has no right to stay on you. Scripture says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and now is the tense it is written in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies that in a queue and not just in a quiet room with a Bible open.

And the God we are speaking about here is the one who is named in Genesis by a woman with nothing, out in the desert, who called Him Thou God seest me. Being seen is His territory. He was already looking at you on Thursday, and the look was not the one you were bracing for.

You are seen by Him and you are not exposed. That is written into the whole of the story, and it is the Spirit who makes the difference between a person being watched and a person being kept.

Notice, too, what the shame does to your prayers. It has made money the one subject you cannot bring to Him plainly. You will pray about your son, your neighbor, your health. When it comes to this you either go silent or you go straight to asking, quickly, in a small voice, as though the topic itself were faintly disgraceful and the sooner it is over the better.

You have a Father you can say a plain number to. He knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask Him, which is written in red, and it means the subject was never news to Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that welcome rather than an embarrassment.
