The Plate Set at Your Place Every Night

There is a plate at his place. There has been for eleven years.

His wife lays it out with the others, because that is what you do, and it sits there through the whole meal catching the light, white and dry and entirely clean.

The blessing is his to say. He says it standing, one hand on the back of his chair, the way his father did.

And every night, at the end of it, comes the same sentence. Lord, give us peace in this house.

Then the plates go round, and the rice goes round, and he takes the pan to the counter and eats there, standing, with his back half turned, while the family talks behind him. Six minutes. He is quick about it. There is always something that needs doing.

At the end his own plate goes into the water with the rest, clean, and is dried, and is put back in the cupboard for tomorrow.

Eleven years of asking for peace at a table he has never once sat down at.

It is not that he is unhappy. He would tell you plainly he has a good life, and he would mean it. He is a man who provides, who fixes, who stays up when someone is ill, who prays for his children out loud and by name.

He is simply always the one on his feet. Serving, fetching, wiping, checking the door. The peace he asks for is a thing he expects to arrive later, when the accounts settle, when the youngest is through school, when he has been steady long enough for it to be reasonable.

Then one evening his daughter, nine, holds up the clean plate and turns it over in her hands like a stone she has found.

Baba, she says, why do you have a plate?

And he stands at the counter with the pan in his hand and cannot think of one sensible thing to say to her.

Perhaps your table is not a table.

Perhaps it is a car in a lay-by at seven in the morning, or a chair by a hospital bed, or the two minutes at the end of the day when the house is finally quiet and the prayer comes out the same way it came out last night and the night before. Give me peace. Give this house peace. Please, some peace.

And you have prayed it faithfully, and you have meant it every time, and somewhere along the line it stopped being a prayer and became a routine you perform standing up.

You are not lacking peace because nobody sent any.

Peace was left, not promised

Read the verse as the legal document it is, because that is what the language is doing.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.John 14:27

Leave. That is the word a man uses over a will. It is what you do when the thing is settled, the beneficiary is named, and the transfer no longer waits on anybody's mood. Jesus is not describing a mood He hopes His friends catch. He is disposing of property on the night before He dies, and the property is His own peace.

You are asking nightly for something that has already been signed over to you. John 14:27 says peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you, and leave is the vocabulary of a will rather than a wish, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has already carried it across the threshold and set it down in the room where you eat.

That single word changes the posture of the whole evening. A petitioner stands. An heir sits.

You have not been kept waiting at any point by God. Ephesians 1:3 says he hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ, and the tense is finished rather than forthcoming, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a settled thing feel present instead of theoretical.

An heir does not apply

There is a particular tiredness that comes from asking for what you already own, and it does not feel like unbelief from the inside. It feels like reverence. It feels like not presuming.

But look at what the asking has quietly assumed.

It assumes the peace is being weighed against the year you have had. It assumes there is a threshold of steadiness, or usefulness, or getting the youngest through school, after which the release comes through. It assumes a queue.

You were made an heir and never an applicant. Colossians 1:12 says the Father hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light, and hath made is a completed act performed by Him rather than a standard you are climbing toward, and the Holy Spirit is named in Scripture as the seal on that inheritance rather than the inspector of it.

Notice too what kind of peace was left, because the world runs a different scheme entirely.

You have a peace that does not behave the way the world's peace behaves. Jesus said not as the world giveth, give I unto you, John 14:27, and the world gives peace on condition, in installments, withdrawn the moment the circumstances turn, and the Holy Spirit administers a legacy that no bad Tuesday can call in.

You are not being measured for this, and no assessment is pending. Titus 3:5 says it is not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy, and the same verse names the renewing of the Holy Spirit as how it comes, so the peace on your table is not held up somewhere waiting on your last six months.
