The Sentence That Followed You to the Sink

It was a good afternoon. That is worth saying first, because it keeps getting left out of the retelling.

Your sister's kitchen, the big dish with the burnt edges everyone fights over, somebody's dog under the table doing the thing where it puts its chin on a knee and looks up as though it has never been fed. Two conversations going at once. The good noise.

And your nephew, seventeen, kind, halfway through a second helping, says it the way you would mention the weather.

"Your job won't exist in five years, though. Will it."

Not cruel. Not even really aimed at you. He has read something, and he is seventeen, and at seventeen a sentence like that is just an interesting fact you get to hold up in a warm room.

Somebody laughed. Your brother in law said something about robots doing the ironing. The conversation moved on within four seconds, and here is the strange part, the part that is difficult to explain to anyone afterwards.

You moved on too. You did. You answered somebody about the dog and passed the beans.

And then you got up and carried the plates to the sink, and turned the tap on, and stood there.

The water ran over your hands for a long time.

Behind you the table was still going. There was nothing wrong. Nobody had said anything about your worth, your character, your family or your standing. A seventeen year old had repeated a sentence he had picked up somewhere.

So why is it still here on Thursday.

Why did you look it up at half past eleven that night with the phone tipped away from the person next to you. Why did you look it up again on Tuesday, and then a third time, differently worded, hoping the different wording would produce a different answer. Why has the phrase been sitting behind everything all week like a hum in a wall.

Because it did not land on your job.

It landed somewhere much older than your job, and much closer in.

You have been the useful one since you were about nine. The one who notices the empty glass, who volunteers, who stays behind to stack the chairs, who gets asked because you always say yes and you are good at it. That is not a complaint. Some of it is genuinely lovely and it has blessed a great many people.

But somewhere in the middle of all that, being needed stopped being something you did and quietly became the reason you get to be in the room.

So when a boy at a table says the work goes, what you hear is not a forecast about work.

You hear a question about whether you get to stay.

The sentence found a wire that was already live

Let me say plainly what I am not going to do, so you can put your guard down for the rest of this.

I am not going to tell you whether your nephew is right. I do not know. He does not know either, and neither does the person he read it from, and that is not me dodging the question, it is the honest state of it. Nothing in this message is a forecast, and I am not going to hand you an opinion about any of it dressed up as comfort.

What I want is the thing that happened in you at the sink. That is the part I can actually help with, and it is the part that has been costing you your sleep.

Here is the scene I keep coming back to.

A woman called Martha has a houseful. Real work, necessary work, the kind that has to be done or thirteen hungry people do not eat, and her sister is sitting on the floor in the other room doing none of it. Martha is not being petty. She is being useful, and she is being useful alone, and she says so.

But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.Luke 10:42

Notice what He does not say. He does not say the meal was worthless. He does not tell her to stop working. Nobody in that house is being told their usefulness is a sin.

He tells her about a category she did not know existed: a good part that cannot be taken.

You have a good part that nothing and nobody has the power to take off you. That is not my encouragement, it is written in the sentence itself, and the promise attached to it is not that the work stays, or the role stays, or the industry stays, but that this particular thing shall not be taken away from her, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a sentence spoken in a crowded house two thousand years ago land on a person standing at a sink with the tap running.

You were named before you were ever useful to anybody. Scripture says He has called you by your name and that you are His, and it is worth noticing where that sentence sits in Isaiah 43: it comes before any mention of what you do, ahead of any assessment, ahead of any output at all, and the Spirit is the one who makes that read as a fact rather than as a lovely idea.

Nobody was consulted about the change you are living through. That is real, and I am not going to smooth it over. But there is a difference between a change you did not choose and a verdict on your worth, and this week those two things have been sharing a wire.

What has actually been asked of you this week

Look at what the last few days have actually consisted of.

Searching. Reading. Reading a second thing to check the first thing. Working out whether the person writing it knows anything. Doing the arithmetic on the years, on the mortgage, on the age you will be, on how long the retraining would take, at half past eleven at night, in the dark, on a small screen, on your own.

That is not planning. Planning happens in daylight with a pen and another human being.

That is an eleven at night attempt to make the ground stop moving by knowing more about it, and it has never once worked, in the entire history of anybody, because knowing was never the thing that steadies a person.

You have been carrying a question you were never designed to hold on your own. Scripture says to cast all your care upon Him because He cares for you, and cast is a hard, physical word, the way you throw something you are not intending to catch again, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the carrying at the other end of that throw.

That dread of being surplus to requirements has no right to stay at your sink. It is written that God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind, and a sound mind is exactly what half past eleven has been quietly eating, and the Spirit named in that promise is the same Spirit who is in the room with you right now.
