The Forecast You Read at One in the Morning

This message is for the forecasts you read until one in the morning, and the fact that your footing has quietly become a feed

It always starts responsibly.

He is not doom scrolling. He would tell you that himself, and he would mean it. He is keeping informed, and keeping informed is what a sensible man does, and he read one careful piece over breakfast about what is coming and thought that was that.

By half past ten he has read four more.

By midnight the ceiling has a shape he could draw. He knows the exact spot where the streetlight comes through the gap in the curtain. His wife went to sleep an hour and a half ago. The phone is warm now, warm enough that he has noticed, and he shifts it to the other hand and reads one more.

Here is the strange part, and it is the part worth catching, because it explains why sleep is not coming. He does not actually believe most of what he reads. He knows some of it is written to frighten him. He knows the confident ones contradict each other, and that half of it will look silly in three years. He knows all of that, and he keeps reading, because somewhere in the last few months the reading stopped being about information.

It became the place he goes to feel his footing.

That is what one in the morning is for now. Not learning. Checking. Putting a foot down to see whether the floor is still there, and never quite getting an answer, and so putting the foot down again.

At twenty past one he puts the phone face down and does the thing he always does, which is pray for about forty seconds, and the forty seconds are real, and they are also thin, because he is praying the way a man rings someone he does not expect to pick up.

He wakes at ten to seven feeling like he has been arguing all night.

And nobody in his life would call him an anxious man. He is the steady one at work. He is the one people ring. That is exactly why nobody has asked, and exactly why he has never said it out loud, because the sentence would sound absurd coming from him: I do not know what I am standing on any more.

Now put the phone face down, because that is your ceiling and that is your streetlight.

You are not foolish and you have not been careless. You have been doing what a responsible man does in a season nobody chose, which is trying to see the ground ahead. That instinct is good. It is the same instinct that makes a man check the weather before he drives his family somewhere.

But a foot has to come down on something, and for a while now it has been coming down on a feed.

The Forecast You Read at One in the Morning

What a feed cannot be

Start with what is actually happening in that hour, because naming it changes it.

A feed is built to be reloaded. It is not a floor, it is a river, and standing on a river is exhausting in a way that has nothing to do with how bad the water is. The tiredness in your body at one in the morning is not caused by the content. It is caused by trying to stand on something that is designed to move.

That is worth separating from the question of whether anything you are reading is true. This is not about assessing any of it. It is about the fact that a man's footing has to sit on something that does not update.

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.Psalm 40:2

David is not describing an opinion he arrived at. He is describing a rescue with a location in it. Out of the clay, onto a rock. Feet set. Goings established, which is an old way of saying his walking became reliable again.

You are standing on something older than every forecast you have read. Psalm 40:2 says God set the feet and established the goings, and both verbs are His and neither is yours, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man feel the stone under him rather than merely agree that it is there.

Notice what the psalm does not do. It does not tell David what is coming next. It does not brief him. It changes what he is standing on and leaves the horizon exactly as unknown as it was, and David appears to find that entirely sufficient, which is the whole education in one verse.

You have not been left to work out the shape of the years on your own. Scripture says the steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and ordering is something done by someone who can see the road, and it is the Spirit of God who does the ordering while you sleep through the parts you were never given to see.

The question, and where it can go

There is one question underneath the hour. There always is.

Not the general dread. The specific one, the one with your own name in it, the one that made you pick the phone back up at ten to one. It is usually short. It is usually embarrassing, in the way that true fears are embarrassing, because it is smaller and more ordinary than the enormous public thing it is dressed up as.

Something like: will there still be a place for me. Or: will I be able to look after them. Or: am I going to be the one who did not see it coming.

That question is not a sin and it is not a failure of faith. It is a real question and it deserves better than a search bar, because a search bar can only hand it back to you with more detail on it.

You have somewhere to put it that a feed cannot offer. His word says cast all your care upon Him, for He careth for you, and cast is a physical verb about throwing something away from your body, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the weight when it lands.

The difference between searching a question and handing it over is not spiritual technique. It is direction. One sends the question outward into a churn that will never resolve it. The other sends it to a Person, who may not answer it tonight and who does not owe you the timing, and who has never once left a man standing on the miry clay after he handed it over.

You are not required to know what happens next in order to be safe tonight. Scripture says take no thought for the morrow, which is not a ban on thinking but a refusal to let a man carry a day that has not been issued to him, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps the heart while the mind admits it does not know.

The breakthrough

The breakthrough tonight is smaller than you would like and better than you expect.

It is not knowing. You do not get to know, and that is not a punishment, it is just the shape of being a person. Nobody in Scripture was given the map. They were given the Shepherd, which is a considerably better arrangement in bad weather and a considerably worse one for a man who wants to plan.

You were put on the rock a long time before this year started. His word says other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ, and the laying is finished tense and not a project, and His Spirit is the one who reminds a tired man at one in the morning what is actually under his feet.

You have never once been the one holding any of this together. Scripture says that by Him all things consist, Colossians 1:17, and consist is a word about being held together rather than running well, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a tired man set that down at one in the morning without anything falling.

So the change tonight is a change of direction, not of information. The question goes to a Person instead of into a search. The hour goes back to being an hour. The phone goes face down and stays there, not as a discipline you have to win, but because it was never the floor and it was making your legs tired.

Sleep is allowed. The ground is not being renegotiated overnight.

Declare this over yourself

In Christ you have been given a footing that no season and no forecast conferred, and Scripture says God Himself set those feet on the rock, which is why His Spirit can carry these words out of a man who does not feel steady tonight. The authority here is His, exercised over dread and over a habit, never over the future and never over anyone else, and what tomorrow actually holds stays His to decide, in His timing.

  1. One in the morning, you are an hour and not an oracle. In the name of Jesus I am taking my footing off this feed, and the God of Psalm 40 has already set my feet on a rock that no forecast laid.
  2. Dread that I have no ground under me, get off my chest. Scripture says He established my goings, so my walking was made reliable by Someone else and it does not need my reading to hold it up.
  3. Father, You do not change and nothing coming has ever caught You unprepared. I am writing my question down and handing it to You out loud, and I am going to sleep.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
