The Second Time the Work Changed

This message is for your trade changing under you twice, and the fear that God's plan for you was tied to the world that is gone

He eats his lunch on the stairwell landing because the break room has a screen in it and the screen is always talking about the change.

Canvas roll beside him on the step, the one with his name inked inside the flap in his own handwriting from when he was nineteen. He learned this work at nineteen. A man taught him, properly, over four years, the way it used to be taught: watch, then do it wrong, then do it again.

And he became good. Not adequate. Good. There was a particular part of the job that nobody else on the floor could do the way he did it, and that part was quietly what he was for.

Then the work changed, and the part he was best at was the part that stopped being needed.

He did not complain about it. He learned the new way. It took him the better part of three years and it cost him more than he told anybody at home, and by the end of it he was good again, in a different way, at a different thing, on a floor that had been rearranged around him.

Then it changed again.

That is the sentence sitting on the step next to the canvas roll. Not that it changed. That it changed again, and this time he did the arithmetic on how many times a person can rebuild in one working life, and the number came out small.

He is not eating the sandwich. He is holding it.

And the thought that arrived at four o'clock this morning is still there, in the same words it used, because it always uses the same words.

I was made for a world that does not exist any more.

That is the one. Not the practical questions, which are real and which he is handling. The other one, underneath, the one that does not sound like fear because it sounds like a conclusion.

If God had a plan for him, the plan was made of that world. The tools, the four years, the particular thing he was for. And that world has gone, so the plan went with it, and what is left is a man on a stairwell at lunchtime learning something new for the third time with less road in front of him than behind.

Perhaps your step is a different step. Perhaps it happened once instead of twice, or three times, or it is happening now while you read. But you know the four o'clock sentence, and you have never said it out loud, because saying it out loud would make it a thing you believe.

If the world you learned your work in is gone, was the plan kept in that world, or in the One who has been a dwelling place in all generations?

The Second Time the Work Changed

Where the plan was actually kept

Psalm 90 was written by a man who had watched an entire world end.

Everything Moses was trained for belonged to a country he left. Everything he was good at was good in a place he could not return to. Then he spent forty years doing something else entirely, and then that ended too, and then he spent forty more years walking through a wilderness with a generation that was dying out around him and a generation that was growing up behind.

Nobody in Scripture has better standing to talk about a vanished world.

Here is the first line of what he wrote:

Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.Psalm 90:1

Read the noun. Dwelling place. Not a guide, not a supervisor, not an arrangement. The place a person lives.

And read the unit of time he chose. Generations. A generation is not a year, it is a whole world: its work, its tools, its assumptions, the things everybody knew, the way things were done. Moses did not write "in the settled generations" or "in the ones where the trade held steady". He wrote all.

You are housed in a Person, and you were never housed in a period. Psalm 90:1 makes God the dwelling place across every generation without exception, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a stable decade, who makes that a floor a man can stand on at four in the morning.

That distinction is the whole message, so let it sit for a second.

If the plan of God for a person is kept in an arrangement of the world, then every arrangement that ends takes a piece of the plan with it. That is exactly the arithmetic being done on the stairwell, and it is correct arithmetic applied to the wrong ledger.

You have not been filed under something that ended. What is written puts the keeping in God's own hands, and His Spirit is the seal on a person rather than a stamp on an era.

This is not a message about the change itself

Let me say plainly what this is not doing, because there has been enough of the other thing already.

There is no assessment here. No forecast about what happens next in your trade or anybody's. No verdict on whether any of it is good or bad, no list of what to learn, no reassurance dressed as analysis. Not because those questions are unimportant, but because they are not the question that woke you, and answering the wrong question with confidence is how a person ends a piece of reading heavier than they started it.

You have been searching. Everybody has. And searching has a particular effect on fear: it feeds it something that looks like food.

The fear that your calling was filed with the old world has no right to stay in your four in the morning. Scripture hands out no anxiety about the future and instead tells a man to cast his care because he is cared for, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that from a page into a chest.

What actually crossed with you

Now the part that gets missed, and it is the part that makes a man lighter.

You think what you lost was the skill. Some of it was. The particular thing that used to be yours on that floor is not needed in the way it was needed, and that is a real loss and it deserves to be named as one rather than talked out of.

But go back and look at what those four years at nineteen actually made.

They made a man who does not leave a job half right. A man who notices the new one on the floor who is drowning and says nothing to anybody but slows down beside him. A man who can be taught, which is rarer than skill and is the only reason he survived the first change. A man whose word about a piece of work can be trusted by people who cannot check it themselves.

None of that was in the tools. All of it was made while the tools were in his hands, and it walked off the floor with him both times.

You were carrying something out of that world that the world was never holding. Hebrews 11 says Abraham went out not knowing whither he went, which means the not knowing was in the account from the beginning and was never a sign that anything had gone wrong, and the Spirit of God is the one who goes with a person rather than with a period.

The breakthrough

The plan was never stored in the arrangement.

It was stored in Him, and He has been the address in every generation, including the two that have closed under your feet and the one that is opening now with less road in front of you than behind.

You are not late, and you are not obsolete, and neither of those was ever a category God was using. Psalm 90:1 has the dwelling place holding across all generations without an exception clause, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that land on a man with a canvas roll and an unwrapped sandwich.

So the third rebuild, if it comes, is not evidence that something went wrong with your life. Moses started over twice and the second start was at an age when most people are finishing. Nobody is promising you his outcome, and this message will not pretend to know what your next five years hold, because the outcome is His and it always was.

What is settled is smaller and stronger than a prediction. You live somewhere that has not moved.

You have a dwelling place, and it is a Person, and He has not relocated. That is written into the opening line of Psalm 90, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it true in a stairwell rather than true in a book.

Now put the sandwich down and do the one thing on the next page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these because Christ is in you and this standing belongs to you, not because you have worked out what happens next. Scripture gives you authority to speak to fear, to a false verdict and to a restless night, and never to another person's decisions about your work, so nobody is commanded here. However He answers about your trade and your years, the outcome is His, and the Holy Spirit carries what you are saying now.

  1. Second change in the work, you have rearranged my days and you were never holding my calling. Scripture says the Lord has been our dwelling place in all generations, and generations is the exact unit you belong to, so you are weather and He is the house. My calling did not come out of your floor and it does not go back into it.
  2. Fear that my calling died with that world, get out in the name of Jesus. You wake me at four and you call yourself a conclusion, and Scripture calls it care that has already been cast on Him, and His Spirit is not the author of the sentence you keep handing me. I am a man with a pen instead of a search box tonight.
  3. Lord Jesus, You have been the address in every generation and my whole life is kept in You and not in an arrangement. I write my question down and I give it to You out loud instead of chasing it. Whatever the work becomes, I am housed, and I am going back down the stairs lighter than I came up.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
