Your Key Was Still on the Nail

For eleven years he was the one who opened up.

Not a job. Nobody wrote it down anywhere. It had simply become the arrangement, the way arrangements do in a small place: he had a key to the big shed, and the key lived on a nail inside the barn door on a loop of orange baler twine, and on the mornings when things needed doing he took it down and did them.

Then came a season he does not describe to people.

It started in the spring and it ran the whole way through to the end of the harvest, and he was not away and he was not ill in any way a doctor would put a name to. He was just done. Some mornings he got as far as the end of his own lane and turned the truck around.

The first few weeks he meant to send word. By the sixth week he could not think what the word would even be. By the tenth he had stopped composing it.

What he had instead was a very clear picture of the nail.

He could see it exactly. The empty nail, and the loop of orange twine gone, and somebody perfectly reasonable having taken the key down and given it to somebody who actually turns up. He could see the small conversation it would have taken. He could hear the tone of it, which was not even unkind in his imagining, and that made it worse.

That is the thing nobody tells you about missing a season. You do not lie awake over what you did. You lie awake over the ledger you assume somebody has been keeping, and the line on it with your name against it, and the small neat mark beside the line.

In the second week of October he went up the lane.

He did not go for a reason. There was no meeting, nothing needed lifting, nobody had asked. He went because he had run out of ways not to, and he parked short of the yard the way a man does when he wants the option of leaving.

The barn door was open on the hook. Cold coming off the concrete. Swallows gone, and that smell of dust and diesel and old straw that does not change from one year to the next.

He looked at the nail.

Now you look at it. Because you already know what is hanging there, and you knew before you got out of the truck, and it is the reason your chest is doing what it is doing.

The key. The same key. The orange twine gone pale where the light hit it all summer, and a gray furring of dust along the top edge of the tag, and nothing else different in the whole shed.

Nobody took it down. Nobody moved it. It hung there through the spring you missed and the whole of the harvest you missed and it was still hanging there in October, because the arrangement was never being kept up by the one who kept turning up.

Both halves were walked by one party

There is a scene in Genesis that most people read past, and it is the whole answer to the nail.

Abram asks God how he can know that a promise will hold. God tells him to bring animals and cut them in half and lay the pieces out in two rows with a path between them. That was the way a binding agreement was made in that world, and everybody watching would have known what came next: the two parties walk together down the path between the pieces, and what they are saying with their feet is, if I break this, let what happened to these animals happen to me.

Then God puts Abram to sleep.

And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.Genesis 15:17

Read who walks. A furnace and a lamp go down between the halves, and they are God, and Abram is unconscious in the dirt at the side of the path.

One party walked. Both halves.

You are inside an agreement that was never resting on your attendance. Genesis 15:17 has God walking the path alone while the man He was making the promise to was asleep on the ground, and the whole weight of it was carried on one side from the first night; the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that ancient scene and stands it under a man in October who has spent six months waiting to be struck off.

That is not a technicality. It is the design. If the covenant had two guarantors, the season you missed would have been a breach, and you would be right to sit short of the yard with the engine running. It has one guarantor. That is why the key was still there.

You have not fallen off any ledger, because the ledger you have been picturing was never written. Scripture says He is faithful that promised, and it puts the faithfulness on His side of the sentence rather than yours, which is the difference between a covenant and a contract; and it is the Spirit, not your own steadiness, who has been holding you inside it through a whole season when you sent no word at all.

The measure was never your turning up

Here is the sentence that does the most work in this whole message, and Paul wrote it to a young man who was watching people fall away.

If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.2 Timothy 2:13

Look at what the faithfulness is anchored to. Not to our performance, and not even to our belief on a given morning. To what He is. He cannot be unfaithful because being unfaithful would require Him to stop being Himself, and that is not an option that exists.

So the question that has been running you since spring is the wrong question. You have been asking whether you are still in good standing. The answer to that question was settled at a fire pit in Genesis and it has not been reopened since.

You were held through every week of it, including the weeks nobody heard from you. His word says that His compassions fail not and are new every morning, and it says every morning, not every morning you showed up for; the Holy Spirit was the one keeping that true across the mornings you turned the truck around at the end of your own lane.

Now hear the thing about attendance, because a certain kind of man will try to convert this message straight back into an obligation.

Showing up is good. Being where you said you would be is good. Those things are how love behaves when it is healthy, and nobody here is arguing you out of them. But they were never the thing that held you in. Turn them into the thing that holds you in and you have quietly swapped a covenant for a rota, and the moment you miss a season you will do exactly what you have been doing, which is park short of the yard.

You are not on probation and there is no re-entry process. Isaiah 55:7 says let a man return unto the Lord and He will have mercy, and He will abundantly pardon, which puts the mercy inside the returning rather than at the end of a period of good conduct; the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a welcome for you in a cold barn rather than a fine line about somebody else.

You have a place that your absence did not vacate. He promised in Hebrews 13:5 that He would never leave nor forsake, and the promise names no season it lapses in and no threshold of neglect that voids it; the Holy Spirit has been the one keeping that promise warm on a nail in a shed you could not make yourself drive to.
