The Sentence That Stayed in the Room

This message is for what you were told at fifteen about backsliding forfeiting the promises, and never having unheard it

She is fifteen, and the hall smells of floor polish.

That detail has never gone. Floor polish, and the hot-plastic smell of a chair stack that has been in the sun all day, and a fire door propped open with a chair because the room was airless, and moths going mad round the light above it. Her friend had a cardigan with a sleeve pulled over one hand. There was squash in a plastic cup on the floor by her foot, going warm.

She could not tell you now who was speaking. She has genuinely tried. The face will not come, and neither will anything else that was said that night, and she has no memory at all of walking home.

What she has is one sentence.

It went in whole, the way a nail goes into soft wood, and it said that if she went back, if she turned around and walked out of all this, then everything God had promised her would go with it. Handed back. Forfeited. Whoever said it very likely loved God and meant it as a fence at the top of a cliff, and none of that has any bearing on what it did, because a sentence spoken over a fifteen year old does not stay a sentence. It becomes furniture. She has arranged twenty years of her life around it without once looking at it directly.

And it worked, at first, if working means what it looks like from outside. She was the most diligent teenager anybody knew. Nothing slipped.

But the years do what years do. There was a stretch in her twenties. There was the winter everything went quiet, and the eighteen months after the move when she could not have told you the last time she prayed with her own words. Every time, the same thing happened underneath: a small cold arithmetic starting up on its own, counting weeks, deciding what the count had cost her.

She is standing at the sink on a Tuesday when it starts again. Nothing has happened. That is what makes it so strange. She is rinsing a mug and the counting begins, and this time she hears it properly for once, and she puts the mug down and stands there with her hands wet, because she has just understood something that will not fit anywhere.

She is not afraid of God. She has never been afraid of God.

She is afraid of a sentence, said in a hall that smelled of polish, by somebody whose face she cannot even remember.

And you have one too.

You know the room it was said in. You could draw the floor. You could not name the person if your life depended on it, and you have never once said the sentence out loud to another adult, because saying it out loud would make it examinable, and some part of you has always known it would not survive being looked at. So it has never been looked at. It has just been obeyed.

The Sentence That Stayed in the Room

Which of the two of you is keeping this

Let me put something down in the middle of the table before anything else, and then we will look at it together.

The whole of your dread rests on one buried assumption, and the assumption is this: that the covenant is a joint account, and that your signature has to keep clearing for it to stay open.

That assumption is where the pain lives. Not in the theology, in the arithmetic. If the thing is joint, then every quiet winter is a withdrawal, and every silent stretch is another week the balance goes down, and a person cannot rest for one single day, because a joint account has to be watched.

You are not the one holding this covenant up, and you never were. Scripture puts it about as plainly as it can be put, that if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful, he cannot deny himself, and read the reason in that verse rather than the comfort, because the reason is the whole thing: His faithfulness is not a response to our performance, it is a property of His own nature, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that difference something you feel in your chest rather than something you concede on paper.

If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.2 Timothy 2:13

Sit with the last clause. He cannot deny Himself. Not He would rather not, not He tries very hard not to. Cannot. For God to drop what He has sworn, He would have to stop being who He is, and there is no mechanism in the universe by which that happens.

That is what your fifteen year old self was never told, and I am not blaming her and I am not blaming whoever was speaking. The sentence was probably meant to keep a room full of teenagers out of harm. But a fence built out of fear does not know when to stop, and twenty years later it is not keeping you from a cliff. It is keeping you from the table.

The sentence that has been running your account is not the word of God, and you have been treating it as though it were. His word says the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and it says that Deuteronomy 7:9 kind of thing about the faithful God which keepeth covenant, using the word keepeth about Him and never once about us, and the Spirit of God in you is the one with the standing to tell you which sentences in your head came from Him and which ones merely got in early.

A fear that counts weeks has no right to stay in a house God has sworn over. Scripture says that perfect love casteth out fear, because fear hath torment, and the torment named there is exactly this one, the low arithmetic that starts up at the kitchen sink, and it is the Spirit and not your own willpower who does the casting out.

He said when, and He said it before the fire

There is a night in the Gospels that speaks to your sentence better than any argument I could build.

Jesus turns to Peter before anything has happened. Before the courtyard, before the fire, before the girl at the gate and the three denials and the crowing and the going out to weep bitterly. And He tells him, plainly, that Satan has desired to have him, that He has prayed for him that his faith fail not, and then this: when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

When. Not if.

The return was spoken over Peter before the leaving had even happened. The restoration was named while the failure was still in the future, and the man it was said to did not hear it, did not believe it, argued with it, and went out and did the very thing anyway.

You were being prayed for on the exact weeks you were counting against yourself. Scripture says he ever liveth to make intercession for them, which is present tense and continuous and was true through your winter and your eighteen months and the stretch in your twenties, and the Spirit is described in the same book as helping our infirmities and making intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered, which means that on the days nothing came out of your mouth, something was still being said.

And notice where Jesus puts Peter afterwards. Not on probation. Not on a reduced tier. Feed my sheep, three times over, on a beach, with breakfast already cooking, and the fire on that beach is the second charcoal fire in the story for a reason, because the Lord walked him back to the smell of the worst night of his life and handed him a job there.

The breakthrough

So here is what is actually true tonight, and it is not a technicality.

The covenant you are frightened of losing is not a joint account. It never was. God swore it by Himself because there was nobody greater to swear by, and the keeping of it has been His from the first day, and your consistency was never the thing holding the roof up.

This is yours right now, on a Tuesday, at a sink, with the counting still going in your head. Scripture says that neither death nor life nor things present nor things to come shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord, and Paul wrote that list to include the very things you have been quietly filing under exceptions, and it is the Holy Spirit who bears witness with your spirit that you are His, which is a witness given rather than a verdict earned.

None of that makes the quiet stretches nothing. Coming back matters, and it matters because it is where you are met, not because your absence was voiding a contract. The counting was never doing what it told you it was doing. It was not vigilance. It was a fifteen year old with a nail in the soft wood, still trying to keep everybody safe.

She can put it down now. You can put it down now. Not because the sentence was said by a bad person, but because it was said by a person, and this covenant was not.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with your hand where it is. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and every word of standing in these lines belongs to Him and has been given to you, which is why they hold on the weeks you have nothing to show, and it is His Spirit who carries them further than the sound of them. What tomorrow asks of you is His to decide, and however He answers, His keeping of this does not move.

  1. Sentence I have carried since I was fifteen, you are not Scripture and you are not keeping this covenant. Scripture says that if we believe not, yet He abideth faithful, He cannot deny Himself, and that puts the keeping of this in hands that have never once slipped. In the name of Jesus, come off my account and out of my kitchen.
  2. Arithmetic that counts my quiet weeks, you are not vigilance and you have no covenant right to stay in this house. Scripture says He ever liveth to make intercession for me, and His Spirit prays in me when my own words run out, so I was being carried through every week you were counting against me. I am kept, and I am not on probation.
  3. Lord Jesus, You are the One who said when and not if, and You said it to Peter before the fire was ever lit. I thank You that my hand is flat on this table because the covenant is already taking my weight. I am Yours today, in this house, and I put the counting down for good.
