Too Small to Say Out Loud

This message is for believing money is beneath prayer, so it is the one subject you have never brought to God

He is one of the most praying men anybody who knows him has ever met, and none of it is for show.

He prays in the van before the crew get in. He prayed out loud, standing in a driveway in the rain, for a neighbor waiting on a scan, and he did it without embarrassment while the neighbor cried. He prays before hard conversations and he prays afterwards. He prays about his daughter's friendships, about his knee, about a man at work he finds difficult, about the weather when it matters and about the weather when it does not.

And on a Sunday night, when the house has gone quiet, he takes the folder off the top of the fridge and sits down at the kitchen table and closes the door.

The door is the thing. Nobody has ever asked him to close it. There is nobody left downstairs to disturb. He closes it every week, without thinking, the way a man closes a door on something he does not want in the room with the rest of his life.

He has a system. Two piles and a highlighter. It takes about forty minutes and afterwards he cannot sleep for an hour and a half, and he lies there doing the same sum in the dark that he has already done twice at the table.

He has never once prayed about it.

Not in a resentful way. He would tell you, if you got it out of him, that it feels wrong. That it is small. That God is busy with the neighbor's scan and with the girl three streets over who nobody is praying for at all, and that bringing a folder and a highlighter to Him would be like bothering a surgeon about a splinter. He genuinely believes that this is reverence. It has never occurred to him that it might be something else.

Last Sunday his daughter came down for water at half eleven and stopped in the doorway and asked what he was doing.

"Nothing. Just sorting something."

And she went back up, and he sat there with the highlighter in his hand and understood that he had just lied to a fifteen year old about a folder, and that there was a room in his life with the door shut and the light off, and that he has prayed his way through every other room in the house.

That is the room you are sitting in. You may not have a folder and you may not have a Sunday, but you have a subject you carry alone, and you have carried it alone so long that the carrying has stopped feeling like a decision and started feeling like the way things are.

Too Small to Say Out Loud

The most reverent thing you ever got wrong

Let me say the true thing before the hopeful one, because hope laid over an unnamed weight never gets down to the man underneath it.

This was never laziness and it was never neglect. It is the opposite, and that is what has made it so hard to see. The category in your head marked not for Him got built out of respect. Money looked grubby next to a scan result. It felt like appetite rather than need. It seemed to you that a man who prays about his own arithmetic is a man who has started treating God as an arrangement, and you would rather have carried it for the rest of your life than do that.

That instinct is honorable and it is guarding something real. It is also standing in the wrong doorway.

And underneath the reverence, if we are being honest at this table, there is a second thing and it is quieter. Some of what is in that folder is there because of decisions you made. Not all of it, and probably not most of it, but enough that praying about it would mean opening it in front of Someone, and it has been easier to keep the door shut than to be seen with the highlighter.

You have been carrying alone the one thing He specifically asked to be handed over. Scripture says to cast all your care upon Him, for He careth for you, and the word underneath care there is the word for the anxiety that divides a man in two at half eleven at night, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a verse like that feel like an instruction addressed to you rather than a nice sentence about somebody.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.1 Peter 5:7

Look at the size of the word all. It is not a word with exceptions built into it. Peter is not sorting the cares into the ones worthy of God's attention and the ones a man should have the decency to manage himself. And look at the reason he gives, because the reason is the whole thing. Not because your problem is significant. Not because you have handled it well. Because He cares for you. The qualification is His affection, and there is nothing in the sentence for you to reach.

You were never the one who decided what is worth His notice. The written word says the very hairs of your head are all numbered, and a God who is counting hair is not a God who needs the subject upgraded before He will look at it, and the Spirit who searches the deep things of God is not going to be embarrassed by a folder.

He never once treated this as beneath Him

Here is a thing worth sitting with, because it quietly dismantles the whole category you built.

Jesus talked about money constantly. Not once as a shameful aside, not once with the tone of a man lowering himself to mention it. He talked about wages and debts and barns and bread and coins, and He told a story in which heaven itself is pictured as a woman who has lost one small coin and lights a lamp and sweeps the entire house until she finds it, and then calls the neighbors in. That is His image, not mine. He reached for a coin and a lamp and a swept floor to explain the joy of God.

And when He taught people to pray, in the shortest and most careful prayer ever composed, He put a supply line straight into it. Give us this day our daily bread. Fourth line. Before the forgiveness, before the deliverance. He did not leave provision out for the sake of dignity, and He was not worried that including it would make His Father look like an arrangement.

You have permission that was issued a very long time ago, and it was never withdrawn. Scripture says He knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask, and the reason the verse exists is to take the awkwardness out of asking rather than to make asking unnecessary, and the Holy Spirit was given as the Helper who prays through us in the exact places where a man cannot find the words.

Now let me be plain about what this message is not saying, because this is the subject where more damage gets done than any other.

Nothing you do tonight moves a number. This is not an arrangement, not a transaction, and not a technique. Nobody here is going to tell you what will happen to your accounts, because nobody here knows, and a man who tells you otherwise is selling something. And hear this one carefully: what is in that folder is not a report on your faith. It never was. Faithful people have thin months and difficult years, and the arithmetic on a kitchen table has never once been evidence about the state of anybody's soul.

You are not being assessed, and that folder is not your file. His word says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, and the God described there is keeping a very different kind of record, and the Spirit who bears witness with your spirit has never once agreed with the verdict you have been handing yourself at half eleven at night.

The breakthrough

So open the door.

Not to ask. Not tonight. Tonight the whole exercise is one sentence with no request on the end of it, and the reason there is no request is that this room has never once had anybody else in it, and the first thing should be the fact and not the wanting.

Say the fact. Whatever it actually is. This is what is in the account. This is what I owe and this is when. I do not know how the next three months work. There is more than enough and I am frightened of losing it, which is a real one and gets prayed about even less than the other kind. Say it flatly, the way you would tell somebody the time. And do not put shame in the sentence, because He was not waiting for the confession, He was waiting for the company.

You have nothing to declare at this door, because He has been in the room the entire time. Scripture says that if I make my bed in the depths, He is there, and there is no elsewhere available to a man, and the Spirit who indwells you was never sitting outside the kitchen on Sunday nights waiting to be invited.

Peace is what is actually on offer here, and it is worth being exact about that. Not a promise about the numbers. Peace: the specific peace of a man who has stopped having a private subject, whose Sunday night has the same God in it as his Tuesday morning, and who is no longer doing sums alone in the dark at one in the morning because there is now Someone else in the conversation.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the folder in front of you and the door open. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so access to Him about this subject is already yours and was never a thing you had to be worthy enough to use. Scripture says to cast all your care upon Him because He cares for you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence like that and makes it feel like an open door rather than a closed one. Speak them out loud, and then leave the outcome to Him, however He answers and whatever He does with the months in front of you.

  1. Kitchen door I shut on Sunday nights, you are the last room in this house with no light on, and you are open now in the name of Jesus. Scripture says to cast all my care on Him because He cares for me, and all was never a word with money left out of it.
  2. Shame that keeps the folder shut, you have been calling this subject beneath prayer, and you were only ever keeping me quiet. His word says He knows what things I have need of before I ask, and the Holy Spirit was given as the Helper for the exact places where I have no words, so nothing in that folder is news to Him.
  3. Lord, You are the God who numbers the hairs on a head and who pictured heaven as a woman sweeping a whole house by lamplight for one small coin, so a household's arithmetic has never once been beneath You. I thank You that nothing in that folder is a verdict on my faith, and that Your care for me was settled long before any of these numbers were. I am saying one true fact about my money out loud to You tonight, plainly, with nothing asked on the end of it.
