The Number You Practiced

There is a jug of water on the table with a slice of lemon turning slowly in it, and nobody has poured any, and that jug is the thing she is going to remember for a year.

Second floor, a meeting room, the blinds half down against the sun. Three of them along one side and her along the other. A printed copy of her own working life lies face down near the man on the left, because he stopped needing it twenty minutes ago. Somebody's lanyard is coiled on the table like a small sleeping animal. And it has gone well, she knows it has gone well, because the woman in the middle has twice said that is exactly what we are looking for, and nobody says that twice by accident.

Then, near the end, in the pleasant voice everybody uses for this part, the man on the left asks what sort of figure she had in mind.

She has one. She has had it for nine days. She stood at the sink on Tuesday with her hands in the water and said it out loud to the window, twice, so her mouth would know the shape of it.

What comes out of her mouth is smaller.

Not by much. Just enough that she hears it happen. Her face does not change and his does not either; he writes it down with no reaction whatsoever, which is somehow the worst part of the whole morning. Then handshakes, and a lift, and a street with a bus stop on it, and a woman standing at that stop trying to work out what just happened inside her own mouth.

She was not being modest. She was not being strategic. Something in her decided, in the half second before she spoke, that the true number was more than she was allowed to want, and it shaved it on the way out.

You know that half second. You have done it in rooms with no interview in them at all. At a counter. On a phone call about a bill, apologizing to somebody paid to be there. In a shop, with a perfectly ordinary thing in your hand, which you put back and then thought about for three days. And the question underneath it never gets said, because saying it sounds like greed, and you have been so careful your whole life never to sound like greed.

I do not know what I am allowed to want. I do not even know whether the wanting is the problem.

The prayer God let stand

Before anything else, let me say the weight out loud, because you have carried it in silence for a long time and silence is most of what makes it heavy. Scripture is not squeamish about money and the Spirit is not embarrassed by a household budget.

There is an arithmetic that runs behind your eyes all day. It runs at the checkout, it runs when the school letter comes home, it runs when somebody says just get whatever you want and your chest tightens instead of loosening. You have got so good at it that nobody can see you doing it, and Scripture says your Father knows the need before the asking, and the Spirit has been in the room for every one of those calculations. And underneath the arithmetic is something older and quieter: you priced yourself down years ago so that nobody else would have to do it for you first.

And there is a second person reading this, and I am not going to pretend you are not here. Your money is not short, it is complicated. There is more of it than you ever expected and it has not brought you one hour of peace, and you cannot say that out loud anywhere, because it comes out sounding like a boast or an insult and it is neither. It is just true, and you are tired.

Both of you are in the same room, and Scripture does not flinch at either of you.

And you are known and not audited. Matthew 6:8 says your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask Him, and the knowing runs ahead of the asking rather than waiting on the wording, and the Spirit is the one who makes that reach a person practicing a number under their breath outside a door.

There is a man in Proverbs who prayed about money out loud, and he put a figure on nothing.

Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me.Proverbs 30:8

Read what he asked for. Not increase. Not less either, and notice how quickly you expected him to ask for less. He asked for enough, plainly, out loud, to the God he trusted with the question. And look what God did with that prayer. He kept it. It sits in the book unedited and unrebuked, nobody having tidied it into something more spiritual on the way in.

And you are allowed to want enough, and Scripture wrote the prayer for you. Proverbs 30:8 has a man asking to be fed with food convenient for him, and the request is left standing in the written word without a rebuke attached to it, and the Spirit is the one who makes an old prayer sound like permission rather than like somebody else's business.

So wanting enough is not the sin you have been treating it as. Jesus Himself put bread inside the prayer He taught, daily bread, the size of one day, right in the middle of a prayer that opens with a Father's name. Wanting is an appetite, and appetite is how a creature is made. He made you a creature on purpose.

Now here is the part that matters most, and I want to be exact about it, because this is the ground where people get hurt.

You are not going to speak to your money. Money is not a mountain and it does not take orders, and anyone telling you that a bank is waiting on your vocabulary is selling you a season of disappointment. Scripture never once hands a believer authority over a bank, and the Spirit does not work that way either. What you are going to speak to is the thing that has been speaking to you. The verdict. The one that reads a balance out loud and then tells you what you are worth.

That verdict is a liar in both directions, and this is the trap that catches the whole room. If a lean month proves God is displeased with you, then a good month proves He is pleased, and now your standing with heaven rises and falls with a figure on a screen, which is a court Scripture never convened and the Spirit never sat in, and you have made money a judge that God never appointed. He did not price you. Whatever you cost was settled long before you had an account, and it was not paid in anything a bank would recognize.

Paul said he had learned the secret at both ends of it, abased and abounding, full and hungry, and that the same sentence held him in both. A lesson that transfers across both ends was never a lesson about the amount.

And you are not waiting on a number to be at peace. Philippians 4:12 has Paul saying he knows both how to be abased and how to abound, everywhere and in all things instructed, and everywhere leaves no season outside it, and the Spirit is the one who teaches that rather than a better quarter.

Which means the peace you are after is not on the far side of a better year. It is available in the lean season and in the full one, it has one door, and the door is a Person.
