Your Hands Remembered First

This message is for to pick up a calling that was set down and assumed forfeit

The board flicks over and the whole concourse makes the same sound at once, a long low groan with somebody's laugh buried in it, and then three hundred people start looking for a seat that does not exist. Wheeled cases going over each other's feet. A queue at the coffee kiosk doubling back on itself. The tannoy saying something nobody can make out, twice.

She has been standing by the pillar for forty minutes with a colleague she has known for six weeks. They were going to the same thing. Neither of them is going to it now.

So she is facing the right way when the boy goes down on the floor at the far side of the pillar. Six or so, coat still zipped to the chin, knees up, both hands clamped flat over his ears. His father crouches in front of him and says his name, then says it louder, because louder is what you reach for. A woman offers him a packet of crisps. A man behind them says something kind about it being a long day. Every kind thing anybody does makes it worse, and the concourse goes straight over the top of him.

She hands her bag to the colleague without deciding to.

She does not crouch over him and she does not reach in. She sits down on the floor a little to one side of him, against the same pillar, back half turned so there is no face to manage, and she drops her voice underneath the noise instead of pitching it over. "It is loud in here," she says, to nobody in particular. "I know." Then she waits, which is the whole of it, and she waits far longer than looks reasonable. No question. No hand. No crisps.

Two minutes on, his hands come down off his ears and settle on his knees. A minute after that he tells her the board makes a small clicking sound just before it changes, which nobody else on that concourse had noticed all evening.

Her colleague is still holding the bag. "Where did you learn to do that?"

And you laugh, and you say it was a hundred years ago, and you take your bag back. Because you know exactly where you learned it. You could name the training, and the room, and the nine years. You have simply not said the name of the thing out loud since you stopped, and you were certainly not planning to start on a station floor in front of somebody you have known six weeks.

Your Hands Remembered First

The first man God said it over was holding a chisel

Let me say the weight first, because you will not hear the rest until somebody has said it accurately.

It is not that you miss it. Missing is clean. You could live with missing.

And you are not describing a loss. You are describing a fear. Scripture says He is faithful that promised, and it never once records Him taking back what He put into a person's hands, and the Spirit is the one who makes the difference between those two sentences land in a body rather than in an argument.

What you carry is heavier, and it has a shape. You think it was taken back. Not lost, not stolen, and nobody did anything cruel. Withdrawn, quietly and reasonably, by a God who had work that needed doing, found you unavailable, and handed it to somebody younger and less complicated. You think there was a list and you think you came off it. That is why you laughed on that concourse with your bag back in your hand. You were not being modest. You would rather carry the thing as a joke than have it refused twice.

Nobody ever said that to you out loud. Nobody had to. It grew in the quiet, and nine years is long enough for it to become the sensible view.

So here is a sentence from the middle of Exodus, in a chapter most of us skim because it is mostly furniture.

And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,Exodus 31:3

Notice the order. God calls the man by name first, out loud, before He says a word about the work. And notice what the filling is for. Not preaching. Not prophecy. Wisdom, understanding, knowledge and workmanship: skill in a pair of hands, in gold and stone and timber and cloth.

The first time in Scripture that God Himself says of a named man, I have filled him with My Spirit, He is talking about a craftsman.

And you are filled with the same Spirit He named over a man holding a chisel. Exodus 31:3 has God saying I have filled him with the Spirit of God before He says one word about the work, and the naming comes first and the task comes second, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a job title who makes a person able to do what they were made to do.

Sit in that, because it dismantles what you have been assuming. Anointing is not a rank. There is no ladder of it, no tier, no league table with the loud and the visible near the top and you somewhere below the fold, and there is no register in heaven on which one believer carries more of God than another. It never came in sizes. God fills a person for the work He has in mind, and the first person He said it over was doing careful work with his hands inside a tent, for a house nobody would remember his name for.

Which brings us to what you actually came here for. Paul says it flat: the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. That word is not about sin there, it means a change of mind. God does not issue a gift and then think better of it. He does not review, reconsider and repossess. Whatever He put in you went in without small print underneath, and He has not been back for it.

And you are carrying something that was never withdrawn. Romans 11:29 says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, which means He has not once revisited the decision He made about you, and the Spirit is the one who keeps it working in a woman who has spent nine years assuming it had been quietly collected.

And you already have your evidence, which is exactly why that station shook you. A thing that is gone cannot be reached for. But you handed your bag over before you had decided anything, and you sat down on a floor beside a frightened child and did the right thing in the right order without one conscious thought, while his own father and two kind strangers were doing the wrong thing kindly and at volume.

That was not a memory. Memories do not do things. That was the gift, still working, still where He left it, answering a situation faster than your permission could arrive.

Paul told Timothy to fan into flame the gift that was in him, not to apply for a new one and not to wait for one to be reissued. Stir up what is already there and has only gone quiet, because ash over a fire is not the end of a fire.

And He knows the name of the thing you set down, and why you set it down, and the reason was real. Something hurt. Something broke. A season took everything you had. Nobody here is charging you with anything, and you did not lose the gift through neglect, because it was never held up by your grip in the first place.

The breakthrough

You have been praying in the wrong tense.

And you are not applying for something. You already hold it. Scripture tells Timothy to stir up the gift of God which is in thee, and the word in thee settles the location before the instruction begins, and the Spirit is the one who has kept it burning under nine years of ash without ever asking permission to.

For years the prayer has been give it back. Restore it. Let me have it again, if You would still have me. And the whole time your hands have been doing it anyway, by reflex, in front of witnesses.

What you buried was never the gift. It was not yours to bury and it did not stop working for one single day, because Scripture says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, and the Spirit is the one who has kept it working while you were certain it was gone. What you buried was the permission, and you have been visiting that stone every single time somebody turns round and asks where you learned that.

Hear the next part carefully, because it is not a promise about outcomes and I am not going to hand you one. It may not come back in the shape it had, and you may not go back to the room you left, or the role, or the people. Bezalel's wisdom did not land in a workshop of his own design. It landed in a tent, on a project drawn up by somebody else, for a house he was not the point of. The gift is not the job you did. It is what God put in your hands, and He can set it down wherever He likes.

And you were never demoted, because there was never a ladder. Scripture says there are diversities of gifts but the same Spirit, and it puts them side by side rather than in a column with a top, and the Spirit is the one who divides to every man severally as He will, which leaves nobody above and nobody beneath.

And it is not late in the way you have been thinking. Late is a word for trains. There is no timetable you have missed, and no version of this in which the God who calls a craftsman by name has forgotten yours.

Declare this over yourself

Say it standing, out loud, where you can hear your own voice in the room. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, the Holy Spirit is in you, and what He put in your hands was given to you and never called back in. Jesus never asked anybody for a mountain of faith in order to move a mountain. He asked for a seed's worth, and then He asked for a sentence, said out loud at whatever is standing in the road. What is standing in your road is a verdict you passed on yourself nine years ago and have been serving quietly ever since. Say it to that verdict. Where the gift goes after today, what room it lands in and who it ends up serving, is His to decide, and however He answers, what He gave you He did not withdraw.

  1. Gift God put in these hands, you are still here and you are still His, and I take you up today in the name of Jesus. Scripture says the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, so what He gave me He never came back for, and what God has not taken back is not mine to keep in the ground.
  2. Buried thing, you are alive and you have only been quiet, and quiet is not the same as finished. Shame that told me the door closed behind me, you have no standing in this house, because Scripture says God calls a servant by name before He ever mentions the work, and He has not forgotten mine.
  3. Holy Spirit, You filled a craftsman's hands with wisdom and understanding and skill, and You have filled mine for the work God had in mind. I thank You, because You do not fill a person and then think better of it, and what You put in these hands is standing up today. I take it up, and where it goes from here is Yours to send.
