The Eleventh First of the Month

The notebook cost less than a sandwich, and the blue elastic round it lost its stretch a long time ago.

Inside the front cover, in her own handwriting, there is a date. Under it, another. Under that, nine more, and the last four are not so much written as pressed in, because by then the pen was being held differently.

Every one of them is the first of a month.

She is not careless. That is the part nobody sees. The night before a first she cleans the flat properly, skirting boards and all, and she puts food in the fridge that belongs to the woman she is about to be, and she takes the thing out to the bin at the end of the path rather than the one under the sink, so there is nothing left in the house for the new person to find. Eleven cleaned flats. Eleven fridges. Whatever else it has been, it has never once been laziness, and nobody who loves her knows the number.

Day four is usually fine. Day six is fine. Somewhere around day nine an ordinary afternoon goes sideways in an ordinary way, and by the evening the whole thing has come quietly back into the house.

So she picks a better date. A rounder one. The first of a month with a bank holiday in it, because that gives her a run at it. Once, the first of a year, which she remembers as the most hopeful she has ever felt about anything.

Tonight is the nineteenth, and she is in the laundrette at the end of the parade because the machine at home has been broken since spring. Nine o'clock. One strip light with a flicker in it, the smell of hot cotton, somebody's red towel turning over and over behind the glass.

The notebook is open on her knee. The pen is uncapped, because she came here to write the twelfth date, and the twelfth date is the first of next month, and it is a good date, and her hand is not moving.

She cannot think of one reason why the first of next month is a better night than this one.

And she cannot make herself write it. And she cannot make herself not.

And you know that chair.

You know the split in the plastic seat and the arithmetic that starts up on its own. Twelve days. Twelve days between here and the date, which means twelve more days of a thing already decided against, carried on purpose, because a number on a calendar said wait.

Nobody has ever seen the inside of that cover. Not one person. And the reason for buying dates was never that you loved them. It is that a date is the only thing anybody ever found that lets a person be completely serious about this without having to be serious about it tonight.

The date was never the door

Let me say the kind thing first, because the unkind version has had eleven runs at this and has not moved it yet.

A person does not set eleven start dates because they do not care. They set eleven because they care enormously and have found only one way to hold the caring: put it somewhere ahead, where it is safe, where it can stay clean and whole and undefeated for a few more days. The date is not laziness. The date is hope with nowhere to stand.

But a date is a promise made to a calendar, and a calendar has never helped anybody in the history of the world.

You are not standing outside something that has been kept shut against you. Scripture says, behold, now is the accepted time, behold, now is the day of salvation, and the word "now" there is not a stopwatch pressed into your hand, it is a door reported open by the One who owns the building, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this paragraph who makes an open door feel like a welcome rather than an alarm.

Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.2 Corinthians 6:2

Notice who is speaking and when. Paul is not scolding anybody there. He is quoting God's own answer out of Isaiah about a time He accepted and a day He helped, and then he leans across the table and says: look, that day is this one.

Now is God's own tense. When Moses asked for a name to carry back to a people who had been waiting four hundred years, the answer was not I WAS, and it was not I SHALL BE ON THE FIRST. It was I AM. He speaks about Himself in the present, always, and that is the room you are actually standing in tonight, whatever the notebook says.

The kindness that has been near you all year is not background noise, and you have been reading it as pressure when it was mercy. Joel 2:13 says to rend your heart and turn to the Lord your God, and it gives the reason in the same breath, that He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, so the turning in that verse is not driven by dread of Him, it is drawn by what He is like, and the Spirit is the one who makes that difference land in the body rather than just in the head.

That difference matters more than anything else here. Fear can start a thing. Fear has started every one of the eleven. What fear cannot do is finish one, because a person driven by fear is running from something and will stop running the moment they are tired, and everybody gets tired somewhere around day nine.

Shame has no right to stay in a room where God is being this kind. Scripture says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and that word "now" is the same now as the one in Corinthians, sitting in the same tense, refusing to be moved to the first of anything, and His Spirit is the one who bears witness with your spirit about whose you are when your own account of yourself has gone quiet.

Nobody in Scripture ever turned on a first of the month

Go looking for it. It is not there.

The son in the far country came to himself standing in a field among the pigs, in the middle of a working day, and the text does not give the date because the date was not the point. Zacchaeus stood up in the middle of a meal with his food in front of him. The woman at the well left her water pot where it was, which is the most ordinary detail in the story and the loudest, because she came for water at noon and went home without it.

Not one of them said, from Sunday. The turns in Scripture happen mid-scene, with the washing still going round.

You were never being scored on the eleven. Psalm 103:14 says He knoweth our frame, He remembereth that we are dust, and a God who remembers what we are made of is not keeping a tally of start dates on the inside of a cover, and the Spirit He gave is called the Comforter rather than the auditor, which tells you what He is in the room to do.

And here is the thing about a turn that nobody says plainly enough. A turn is not a march. It costs no ground at all. A person facing the wrong way and a person facing the right way can be standing on exactly the same square of floor, and everything between them happened in the feet, not in the miles.

The turn in front of you tonight is one movement wide, and it is available at nine o'clock on a nineteenth. His word says that in returning and rest shall ye be saved, putting the saving in the returning rather than in the distance covered or the date chosen, and the Spirit who lives in you is the one who supplies what the returning costs, so nobody here is asking you to generate anything you do not have.
